10. Silicones and plasticizers
‘So many styling products contain harmful silicones and plasticizers,’ Michael warned.
‘If hair looks rough and frizzy, and simply by wrapping each strand in a cling-film mask it can look silky and shiny, who would say no to that?
‘Not enough people yet understand that this creates an addiction to chemical additives that, whilst making the hair look lovely today, damages it further, so necessitating more of the cosmetic product next time.’
He added that silicones are like ‘cocaine for hair’ as they provide a happy glossy veneer but are ‘rotting the hair from the inside’.
‘You’ll rarely see the word silicone on an ingredients list,’ Michael added. ‘They go by scientific names. The most common silicones in hair and beauty products to avoid are Dimethicone, Cyclopentasyloxane, Methicone, Amodimethicone, Phenyltrimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Divinyldimethicone, Dimethiconol and Dimethicone Copolyol.’
